ABOUT LLORET DE MAR
Lloret is a city built on tourism. It is the largest tourist point on the famous Costa Brava, which inhabit about 35 thousand people. In summer the number of guests is exceeding the number of inhabitants for five times!
As the tourist industry grew, so grew the city. In our regions is primarily known as a destination for graduation trips, and most of the guests are of similar age. It's hard to get someone here in search of sights and natural beauties, but Lloret has a little more of the numerous night life.
Lloret is a city of long history, over a thousand years old. It was founded by the Romans, whose traces are seen around town. It is believed that the city's name comes from the Romans and their words 'lauretum', which would translate from the Latin meant laurels. Until the fifties of last century, people lived mainly from trading, and then arrived tourism, then the city has changed fundamentally. Many beautiful buildings were built in that period, and the most valuable heritage is the church which was simply called the 'Parish church'.
The are few modern houses remaining, so-called 'Indianosa' or 'Americanosa'. These are the houses of the people who went to America during the 19th century. in search of a better life. If they would become rich, regularly they would return to his native city. Welcomed to the congregation, they would marry a young girl, they would tore down the old house and built a large villa in its place . The rest of their lifes they would enjoy the fruits of their oversea work, and commiting to the charity work. Rare are those houses that have survived concreting the authentic part of the town. Today they are generally ’’squeezed’’ by the hotel blocks.
Besides entertainment, guests are comming here for swimming. Beaches are numerous and mostly sandy. The main town beach is longer than a kilometer.
The reason why everyone usually comes to Lloret's is the night life. The city is really alive and full of cafes, pubs and clubs. Town is crowded with young people eager to entertain. Go to the foam party in Colossos, karaoke in Moby's or simply dance in Bumpersu, Tropics, or Hollywood.
At the end of the evening, better to say at dawn, the city is still alive, and singing is heard on every corner, also at the beach, as many are going there after the parties.
In short, Lloret is not a city which will fascinate you with its culture, sights and natural beauty, but the young people comming here, will be very satisfied, because the night life is really great, and this is exactly what they are looking for.
. ATRACTIONS
Town Hall (1868-1872)
This buildind of neo-classical style. Constructed according to the plans drawn up by Félix de Azúa, between 1868 and 1872. In 1867 it was agreed that the Torre de la Vila tower should be demolished. The walls of the old d'En Pau Rei mill were also at risk of ruin and were torn down. With the demolition of the Tower the city was left without a town hall. The authorisation to demolish the Tower was granted by the civil governor in July 1867, and by September the projects and budgets for the new town hall had already been prepared and the bidding conditions for the work were approved by the city council. The placement of the Community Hall some thirty metres closer to the sea than the old fort and the subsequent alignment of the future esplanades with the new factory, a series of plots of land pertaining to the City Hall appeared. The Casa de la Vila or town hall, one of the most modest in Catalonia, was solemnly inaugurated in February 1872 and attended by the Province's highest authorities. A telegraph was inaugurated in 1884 and the City Hall's clock was installed the same year. Construction of the bell tower, named "bona nit", was awarded to the blacksmith Pere Tarrats, by design of Agustí Font Vilarrubí.
The Venus of Lloreti
Since it was erected in 1966 to commemorate Lloret de Mar's Millennium, the Dona Marinera (Fisherman's Wife) has become one of the most emblematic symbols of the town. This bronze sculpture, created by the artist, Ernest Maragall, stands on the rock at the end of Lloret beach and represents the figure of a woman looking out to sea in greeting or welcome. The sculpture, entitled "The Venus of Lloret", gives the Lloret coastline an element of great beauty and quality. Legend has it that whoever touches the foot of the sculpture while looking out at the horizon, will have their wish come true.
En Plaja's Castle
This building, situated at the end of the Sa Caleta beach, is in fact a house-castle built by the Girona industrialist, Narcís Plaja. The project, dating from 1935, was the work of the Girona architect, Isidor Bosch. Construction work, though, was not completed until the 1940s, once the Civil War had finished. The construction of the building was surrounded by controversy among the local people. Despite this, however, the image of the castle has become one of the symbols identifying Lloret, as, year in year out, it is the subject of postcards and photos taken by the thousands of tourists visiting the town.
Hasinto Verdaguer
Martí Sureda devised the plan for the esplanade, which would later bear the name of Jacinto Verdaguer, with just the right dimensions, without exaggeration, on land reclaimed from the sea. At one end, the Town Hall, the work of the architect Félix de Azúa, was built in 1872, while at the other the Garriga House, constructed in 1887, The construction of the Garriga House, previously mentioned. Thus, a promenade where palm trees would later be planted occupies the space between this house and the town hall, the Verdaguer promenade. This, along with the fact that the majority of the buildings along the front maintain a truly colonial air, was to give this urbanistic sector of Lloret a very evocative West Indian look.
Roman sepulchres
Based on the characteristics and content of this monument and on the pottery found, it can be dated to the middle of the second century AD. Despite its unique nature, it was not identified until 1891 by the historian, Joaquim Botet i Sisó. The tower is prismatic in shape with a square base and is comprised of a base separated from the rest of the structure by rows of tegula roof tiles placed as ornamentation, a slightly narrower central core and a type of roof on the upper part, which would once have been crowned by a pyramid-shaped finish. Its total height is 4.15 m. Inside the base is an oval-shaped space where the ashes of the cremated were placed. The monument -next to an ancient footpath- |
